Michelle Lawson [Captured at Smith College]
Michelle Lawson is a powerhouse in the tech world, driven by a passion for empowering women to break barriers in computer science. Michelle studies Computer Science at Smith College, a private historically women's college, along with Machine Learning at MIT. Currently a third-year undergraduate student, Michelle has already accomplished what she once dreamed of: founding Computer Science Girlies, a vibrant non-profit organization that connects, educates, and uplifts thousands of Gen Z women in tech globally.
But Michelle’s journey began long before her community exploded to over 85,000 followers on Instagram and 60,000 on TikTok. From a young age, Michelle was in love with Computer Science— the logic of it, the study of it, and the limitless possibilities it allowed for. It was this love for Computer Science that led her to join a lecturer in Computational Theory, Pablo Frank Bolton, along with another Smithie, Liberty Lehr, to publish research in computer science education, exploring a more effective approach to assess students in STEM.

Beyond research, Michelle’s true joy comes from educating and motivating others. Her social media platforms are filled with not just tips and resources for beginners, but with stories and encouragement, aimed at anyone feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of tech. Her goal? To show that with the right guidance and community, anyone can learn and excel in computer science.
Michelle Lawson is a leader in the conversation. At TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, she will be hosting two roundtable sessions, focusing on building communities online, especially within the Gen Z audience. As someone who has successfully grown a thriving online community, Michelle Lawson is eager to share her insights with others looking to build meaningful, engaged audiences in the digital age.
Earlier this year, she gave a workshop at Tufts University’s Women in Tech conference titled “The Internship Playbook,” a comprehensive guide on how to approach the internship search process, a process a lot of students today find challenging. She believes in logical conversations, that don't just address te struggles and successes, but show step-by-step how one can navigate through it all.
Despite all these achievements, Michelle remains a student first. Balancing her academic work with her leadership role at Computer Science Girlies, she’s constantly learning, growing, and seeking new ways to fuse her academic knowledge with real-world impact. Whether she’s researching, speaking at conferences, or creating viral content, Michelle’s heart is in empowering women to see themselves as not just participants, but leaders in the tech space.
